NFL Tickets – Second-Tier Quarterbacks
Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen are essentially locks to be the first two quarterbacks selected in the 2010 NFL Draft. Bradford is a cerebral guy that most people think should go number one overall, while Clausen is a fiery, tough signal caller that played in a pro-style offense in college. There are more than two teams that need help at the quarterback position, though, and those organizations that miss out on Bradford and Clausen will look to the next tier of signal callers to address their needs.
First let’s take a look at the teams that could at least consider drafting a quarterback in the first three rounds:
St. Louis Rams: They desperately need a franchise QB and conventional wisdom has them selecting Bradford with the first overall pick.
Washington Redskins: They need a quarterback of the future for Mike Shanahan to groom and are definitely in the mix for a top signal caller at number four overall.
Seattle Seahawks: Unless they think Charlie Whitehurst is the answer to the post-Matt Hasselbeck era, they’ll consider a QB.
Cleveland Browns: Mike Holmgren could look to acquire a guy to groom for the future behind Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace.
Oakland Raiders: Not all that likely until Al Davis finally gives up on JaMarcus Russell, but you can’t rule it out.
Buffalo Bills: They know neither Trent Edwards nor Ryan Fitzpatrick is the answer.
Jacksonville Jaguars: I’m not sure how many more years David Garrard has left as a starter.
San Francisco 49ers: The Alex Smith experiment could come to an end after this season.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Rumors are swirling that the team is starting to plan for life without Ben Roethlisberger.
New England Patriots: Tom Brady could be entering the home stretch of his career and they’ve got a lot of Day Two picks.
Arizona Cardinals: Are they sold on Matt Leinart?
Carolina Panthers: Matt Moore looked solid last season, but I think they’ll look to get another guy in place in case Moore doesn’t work out.
Now let’s take a look at the three quarterbacks that I consider second-tier guys:
Colt McCoy, Texas: McCoy looked really good in his pro day workout, better than expected for the most part. His accuracy will get him drafted in the second round at the latest, though his size and college system worry some scouts. McCoy threw the deep ball well in his workout and seemed to challenge himself with his throwing repertoire in an effort to prove something to NFL scouts. He’s a tough kid and a leader, and I think someone will fall in love with him and select him in the late first or early second round. I think Cleveland is a real possibility, and I wouldn’t sleep on Buffalo if Tim Tebow is snatched up earlier than expected.
Tim Tebow, Florida: Tebow is undoubtedly the most polarizing figure in this draft class and will be the most talked about player on draft day despite being an unlikely first-rounder. It could happen, though, as teams have become enamored with his character and personality. Tebow definitely has the “it” factor that gets talked about around draft time and could convince a team that he’s worth using a first-round selection on.
It’s more likely he goes in the second round, but at this point I don’t think he slips to the third. He’s a project, but one that teams seem willing to take on. One landing spot that seems likely is Buffalo. The Bills could definitely use their pick early in the second round to grab the former Gator, who would be instantly loved in Western New York. It might not be the best pick for the franchise, but it will be a popular one that sells loads of NFL tickets. Where Tebow lands will be the most interesting draft day story due to the uncertainty that surrounds his landing spot.
Dan LeFevour, Central Michigan: Some people like him a lot, and some think it’s a joke that he could go in the second round. I put him here because I’ve heard reliable sources, such as ESPN’s Mel Kiper, endorse the kid. He’s a smart quarterback that has drawn some Chad Pennington comparisons and could sneak his way into the second round, especially if Tebow and McCoy go early. He’s definitely a project, but he grades out solidly all around and could end up being a starter in the league in the future. Carolina is a team to watch here.
