2010 College Football Predictions – Penn State

The Penn State Nittany Lions were not able to win back-to-back Big Ten titles.  They finished just off the pace at 6-2 in conference play, but it was still a great season.  Penn State ended its 2009 campaign at 11-2 after edging out LSU in the Capital One Bowl.  Penn State’s defense was the best in the Big Ten in terms of points allowed in 2009.  The 2010 Nittany Lions will have to depend even more on the defensive side of the football following the loss of quarterback Daryll Clark.  Clark’s absence will make it tough for the Nittany Lions to win the Big Ten and to challenge for a national title, which is what head coach Joe Paterno strives for each year.  The schedule makes these goals even more difficult.  Penn State has to play Alabama, Iowa and Ohio State on the road.

Offense: It will be tough to replace Clark, who now holds Penn State records for career touchdown passes (43), career touchdowns (65), touchdown passes in a season (24), touchdowns in a season (31) and passing yards in a season (3,003).  Kevin Newsome will likely be the guy that tries to fill Clark’s big shoes.  It’s clear that Newsome is not the passer that Clark was, but he is a talented runner.  Coach Paterno has proven to be good at adjusting his offenses to suit the players he has.  With this in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Penn State revert back to a more run oriented scheme like they ran in 2005 when they won the league.  The loss of Clark hurts, but at least running back Evan Royster is still around.  Royster followed his strong 2008 campaign by rushing for 1,169 yards and six touchdowns in 2009.  A more run-heavy offense could take away some of Penn State’s big play ability.  This means that wide receiver Derek Moye could see his numbers decline.  Moye caught 48 passes for 785 yards and six scores last season.  Paterno has also expressed concerns with the offensive line following the team’s spring tune up.

Defense: The offense may take a step back, but a defense which led the Big Ten in points allowed and finished second in yards allowed will keep the Nittany Lions among the conference elite.  Penn State allowed only 12.2 points per game and gave up only 274.5 yards per game last season.  The defense was exceptional at stopping the run, only giving up 89.9 rushing yards per game last year.  With big nose tackle Ollie Ogbu back, the Nittany Lions should continue to stuff the run in 2010.  At defensive end, Penn State’s top returning sack man, Jack Crawford, appears poised for a breakout season.  He came up with 5.5 sacks last year.  The secondary is solid with three of four starters back.

Prediction: 4th Big Ten – I don’t think a Big Ten title is in the cards for Penn State this season.  The defense will remain top notch, but the offense won’t be nearly as explosive without Clark.  Still, 2010 figures to be another year in which the Nittany Lions can challenge for double-digit wins. Since the popularization of sport through the technology and information boom, the word great has often been overused and wasted. Any sport which had a good fan base is now shown all across the globe through satellite television or the internet. None more than football (since there are about 5 billion people following the World Cup).There is no play, no foul, no player unknown or unreported. Now a player who would be termed as good or sometimes even average is tagged as great.

None deserve the greatest tag more then Edson Arantes Do Nascimento or as we know him better Pele. The face of football, “The King”, this little black boy from Brazil changed the way football was played. The Brazilians can be credited for making the game of football “Beautiful” and giving it the title “Beautiful Game” or “Jogo Bonito” (a term first and often used by Pele). Football is not an ordinary game it is the passion and life of the Brazilians, which we see in their flamboyant and artistic play. The good players play the game well and live up to expectations, but the great players change the way the game is played and exceed expectations.

Pele made the attacking style of Football what it is today. Yet he said “The only thing I wanted to do when I began playing football was to be as good as my father.” Pele was said to have a sense of when the ball would come to him, he seemed to know when he would get it. Ball control, goal scoring ability, passing skills he had them all. Pele is the soul of football. An argument which surfaces often is his comparison to Maradona (owing to the traditional rivalry between Brazil and Argentina) and truly both are one of the finest exponents of the game.

Pele believed in fair play and equal chances, Maradona on the other hand was not the ambassador for fair play and maybe that is the difference. Maradona had the “Hand of God” to support him win the greatest prize and Pele had Garincha, Zagallo, Rivelino, Jarzinio, Vava and the greatest football team ever assembled. Not to say Maradona did not have the talent, he did but somewhere along the line greed got the better of him. As Bellinio the Captain of Brazil in the 1958 had said “We are not here for the money, we are here to win the World Cup!”

Football Crazy Wall Clock

To make a Football Crazy Wall Clock you will need…

Paint, thick card or an old grocery box, a clock mechanism and clock hands (you will find these at craft shops) and a print out of pattern of Football Shirts which is available at the link below.

Colour the football shirts in the team’s strip you choose. You can colour them randomly if you wish. Number each shirt 1 to 12.

To make the clock face, draw around a large dinner plate or a tea tray onto some card. An old grocery box is great. Cut out two identical circles, and glue them together so that the lines in the cards structure cross, this will give the clock face extra strength.

Once the glue is dry, paint the clock face green. Again leave to dry. With white paint, paint on a centre line through the middle of the clock face, and paint a kick off circle in the middle of the clock.

Push a pencil through the centre of the clock face ready to attach the clock mechanism. Be very careful and use the old Plasticine trick – Put a ball of Plasticine on the table, put your card on top of it where you need the hole to be, and push the pencil through the card and into the Plasticine.

Arrange the football shirts on the clock face and stick them down.

Push the clock spindle through the hole and push on the hands. The mechanism has a hole for hanging the clock on the wall.

Put a battery in the clock and set the time.

Baseball Cards Since the Late 1800s

The Nineteenth Century

Baseball and photography in the United States were both seeing an explosion of popularity in the mid nineteenth century. This provoked baseball clubs to start taking individual and group pictures of their members. Some of these pictures were printed on smaller cards, much like modern-day, wallet sized photos. In the late 1860s, baseball became a professional sport, and trading cards began to appear with photos of players and teams. These were mainly used as a means of advertisement for companies, who placed an ad on the back of the card.

A sporting goods store in New York, called Peck and Snyder, began production of trading cards featuring teams. As a sporting goods store, baseball cards were the perfect advertisement vehicle for them. The cards produced by Peck and Snyder are often times referred to as the first baseball cards.

A trade card during these times typically featured an image on one side, and a business advertisement on the reverse side. Color printing technology began to increase the attractiveness of baseball cards. Photos began to be seen in black and white as well as sepia. Some baseball cards were printed as playing cards, either for conventional card games or simulations of a baseball game.

By 1886 cigarette packs often included baseball cards in them for promotional purposes as well as the protection of the cigarettes. Baseball had become so popular by the end of the century that production of the baseball cards had not only spread across the Americas, but also into the Pacific Isles.

Early Twentieth Century

The majority of cards being produced were by candy companies and cigarette companies. Breisch-Williams Company, (a Pennsylvania-based confectionary company), produced the first major set of baseball cards of the century in 1903. Soon after, baseball cards were beginning to appear in more and more products. In 1914, Cracker Jack’s began using baseball cards as the included prize in the box.

The Twenties to the Fifties

Baseball card production began to fall off during World War I due to the transition to wartime production. This lasted until the late thirties, when the United States began to see the effects of the great depression. During the years in between, production of baseball cards went through the roof. The culmination of this production spike was the Goudey Gum Company’s set, produced in 1933.

Again, in 1941, wartime production began to significantly affect the number of baseball cards being produced. In 1948, baseball card production increased once again. The Leaf Candy Company and Bowman Gum introduced the first sets when wartime production came to a halt. During the1950s, Japanese baseball cards associated with the popular Japanese card game, menko, began to flood the market.

I am often asked about Sports Arbitrage Trading and in theory you can make money from it however in reality it does prevent some problems.

If you have located an arb opportunity on Football for example Chelsea v Man Utd you would

• Back the Home win with Bookmaker A

• Back the Draw with Bookmaker B

• Back the Away win with Bookmaker C

Obviously out of these 3 bets 2 will lose but the profit from your 1 winning bet will cover the loss from your 2 losing bets and leave you with an overall tax free profit.

Sports arbitrage does sound good on paper but there is a downside to it.

There are three ways you can approach it

1. Subscribe to an arb alerts service where you are notified by text message and/or email of arb opportunities that exist

2. Search and find the arbs yourself

3. Buy specialist software which scans the net to find arb opportunities

The main drawback of sports arbitrage is that although these arbs do exist they do not stay around for very long you do have to be quick to profit from them.

From my experience after you have received the alert (even if you have acted upon it immediately) and logged into the necessary betting exchange or bookmaker accounts the odds will have changed and the arb opportunity has gone.

You can try locating your own arb opportunities via www.oddsexplorer.com or other odds comparison sites although you will still have the aforementioned problem where the arb does not hang around for too long.

If you do manage to successfully carry out an arb then hope and pray the profit ends up with a UK or Ireland bookmaker or exchange as a lot of the arbs tend to feature at least one and often two foreign/european bookmakers/exchanges and while they make it easy for you to open an account with them and deposit funds withdrawing any winnings sometimes involves a lengthy drawn out process where you have to provide proof of ID I had an issue with a foreign sportsbook where they actually wanted me to send my original passport and credit card (photocopies not acceptable) to them which I was not prepared to do.

Another drawback is having a certain amount of funds in each of the bookmaker/exchange accounts be aware that if you do not use your account for several months then the next time you log in you may find that your account balance is £0.00 when it should not be.

If you are thinking of trying sports arbitrage I would recommend trying to use only UK bookmakers and exchanges although the profit margins will not be as big as they would if you used foreign bookmakers at least you can have a degree of confidence that you will actually get your hands on any winnings.
