There are various manufacturers of Helmets on the market now, which previously weren’t available. The different helmet mfr’s have different designs. It’s up to the personal preference of the player. If I were the athletic director of a college program I wouldn’t allow some of the more stylized versions like the Schutt ION 4D or ION-T-EGOP-II, which look too bizarre, but then I’m from the old school. I originally posted this article on my website in the Fall 2010 and was amazed at the timing following the article regarding the issues related to Football head injuries and the subsequent actions regarding Football Helmets. Orange County is a mecca for high performance sports, especially high school football. Thousands of our athletes are injured during the fall every year. In addition to common ankle and knee injuries, many athletes suffer minor or major concussions as a result of the physical nature of football. Head injuries, on the whole, are the most dangerous type of damage the body can sustain in football. No other contact sport leads to as many serious brain injuries as football does. So why aren’t we doing more to eliminate serious head injuries? Who’s accepting responsibility?

Friday Night Lights and Concussions

The actual number of concussions that occur in football is difficult to determine due to under reporting of concussions. However, Time magazine reported in January 2010 that “high school Football Players alone suffer 43,000 to 67,000 concussions per year” and “the true incidence is likely much higher, as more than 50% of concussed athletes are suspected of failing to report their symptoms”. This is often due to the athletes inability to recognize the symptoms of a concussion. With the 2010 high school football season in full motion, The National Federation of State High School Associations has revised its rules on concussions and now require that “any player who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors associated with a concussion must be removed from the game and shall not return to play until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.” This new rule is a great step but it doesn’t address head injuries during practice and doesn’t solve the problem of undetected concussions.

The Punch-drunk NFL Alumni – Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy

During Week 1 in the NFL, four concussions were reported. The NFL has been conducting research on retired players to test the effects of concussions on the long-term health of their players. Studies are recognizing a disturbing trend of a debilitating disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, which has common symptoms of a retired boxer – depression, sudden memory loss, and even paranoia.

Helmets, Seeing Stars, and Concussion Defined

While football helmets prevent bumps and bruises and serious skull fractures, they don’t stop the brain from banging against the skull, which leads to concussion. What is a concussion? A concussion is a brain injury that is caused by a sudden blow to the head or to the body. The blow shakes the brain inside the skull, bruising and stretching the tissue, which temporarily prevents the brain from working normally. Some athletes have obvious symptoms of a concussion (such as passing out or feeling light headed), others “see stars” momentarily and continue playing instead of resting. Repeated blows to the head, which are routine in football, may require surgery and can have lifelong repercussions on one’s ability to move, learn, or speak as described with CTE. By resting a few hours to a few weeks, athletes can fully recover from a concussion.

While I am a fan of football, having played during my youth, something has to be done to reduce, significantly, the high number of football related head injuries. In addition, more needs to be done to help ex-football players deal with the aforementioned problems associated with repeated concussions. Is there a case for legal action with football?

Lawsuits in contact sports are typically not pursued unless there is an obvious intent to injure outside the scope of regulated football, such as a coach punching a player or another player throwing a helmet to intentionally hurt another player, coach, or fan: or if an instance of violence happens off the field, such as a fan throwing a bottle at an athlete. The common view in the courts is that athletes understand and accept the risks involved with playing football and, therefore, responsible for the risks associated with playing football. However, that doesn’t necessary mean that other entities and individuals connected, and possibly responsible, for one’s football head injuries, aren’t liable for their negligence. If you feel other entities or individuals have had a hand in your, or your family member’s, head injury or symptoms from previous head injury, you may want to consider consulting an attorney about the matter.

New Mexico Senator Urges FTC to Investigates Helmet Companies

Sen. Tom Udall D-N.M. has been urging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate possible misleading claims by some helmet companies. After his encouragement, the FTC has agreed to investigate such claims.

In a letter written early last week, Udall told FTC Chairman, John Leibowitz, that helmet compaines “appear to be using misleading advertising claims” and that “some helmet reconditioning companies may be falsely selling used helmets as meeting an industry safety standard.”

In a letter obtained by the Associated Press on Friday, January 14th, Leibowitz wrote a responding letter to Udall saying, “We agree that these are serious concerns, and will determine what action by this agency may be appropriate.”

Issues involving serious health concers- especially those involving childreen and young adults- are a very high priority for the comission, says the letter.

The FTC is specifically concerned about Riddell and Schutt Sports, two leading helmet makers. Misleading safety videos made on these companies’ web sites are what concern the FTC. According to Riddell’s web site, research shows a 31 percent reduction in the risk of concussion in players who wear its helmets. There does not seem to be much scientific evidence to support this claim, says Udall. The official helmet for the National Football League (NFL) is supplied by Riddell. These claims from Riddell have deeply troubled Udall and the FTC.

Schutt Sports and Riddell have not commented on the FTC letter. Riddell called his allegations “unfounded and unfari” and Schutt Sports said the company never claimed its helmets were “concussion reducing”, said the companies at the time of Udall’s letter.”

Futhermore, Riddell CEO, Dan Arment, said, “Riddell has consistently maintained a policy of transparency with all of our research and products and participated in any helmet test when requested. Riddell has exceeded all of the industry standards and conducts and submits to more rigorous testing than most companies in other industries.”

Helmets used in the NFL, NCAA, and high schools are required to go through testing developed by the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE), but the group’s web site says it establishes voluntary test standards and manufacturers test their own helmets. Also, the NOCSAE does not possess a surveillance mechanism to enforce such compliances.

People who participate in high-contact sports such as football are at higher risk for traumatic brain injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1.4 million Americans suffer a traumatic brain injury every year. Fifty thousand die and over 20,000 need hospitalization or some form of traumatic brain injury treatment.

They would buy an xl helmet and use the inflator to change the size to fit anyone. Personally, i think the inflatables are better because they take more impact as i play in a hitting position, but a quarterback wouldn’t need it as they rarely get hit. I will answer your last question first…No, I would not wear a youth helmet if I’m playing adults. A youth helmet is made of ABS plastic and adult helmets are made of Polycarbonate. The ABS is a little softer and lighter so kids can wear them without becoming bobbleheads. Also, kids don’t hit near as hard as adults do so you def want to get an adult helmet.

As far as the Schutt DNA helmet I would advise that you look into the Riddell Revo Speed helmet before you waste your money on a piece of Schutt. The Riddell Revolution series helmets have concussion reduction technology built into them where as the DNA does not. The side impact protection offered by Revolution helmets is second to none.
