Steve Young is a very accomplished athlete who has extended his relevance in the game Football by making a career out of being a popular on air television personality for the ESPN network. While a younger generation of football fans may be most familiar with Young for his current work as a commentator on ESPN Monday Night Football Post game shows fans old enough to remember his playing days know that he was truly something special on the gridiron. Long before Steve Young became a Super Bowl MVP in 1995 with the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL he was a prominent player for the Brigham Young University (BYU) Cougars and later a poster boy for the upstart USFL spearheaded by Donald Trump to compete with the NFL.

After being dubbed a high school athletic prodigy out of Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut Steve Young, a three sport star in high school (football, basketball, and baseball), moved across the country to continue his football career at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. Young who was initially considered a run first and throw second type of quarterback worked hard to overcome his shortcomings at passing the ball. Young, who played quarterback for an option run style offense in high school, eventually made his weakness his strength to the point that by his senior season he set an NCAA single season record by completing 71.3% of his throws.

The First Team All-American quarterback at BYU led an explosive offense that thanks to efficient quarterback play established a new NCAA record for total offense as the squad averaged 584.2 yards per game while racking up an 11-1 record. Despite finishing second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy to running back Mike Rozier of Nebraska Steve Young did receive other noteworthy accolades including the Davey O’Brien Award given annually to the best quarterback. Young completed his college career in style by tossing the game winning touchdown in a Holiday Bowl win against the University of Missouri in 1983. The pass that gave BYU the 21-17 win was the tail end of a trick flea flicker play. Young would later be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

The upstart USFL (United States Football League) was just getting off the ground when Young was prepared to turn pro in 1984. While the established NFL still seemed like the direction the game would head for the long term the USFL was successfully picking off star players to join their league and Steve Young was amongst the young talent that was lured by lucrative contracts to suit up for the less established brand. Young signed what was at the time considered an extremely lucrative deal in the form of a $40 million annuity contract in exchange for agreeing to play for the Los Angeles Express for ten years.

The career Steve Young had in the USFL was shorter than scheduled as a result of the owner of the team he played for going bankrupt in Young’s second season. Financial debacles caused embarrassing lapses in the integrity of the league including bus drivers refusing to drive teams to games after paychecks bounced and players simply not showing up. Interestingly, due to the structure of the original contract that Steve Young agreed to he is still being paid from that original contract and will continue to be every year through 2027. Due to the annuity nature of the original $40 million contract Young was scheduled to be paid $1 million a year for 40 years. Even though the now defunct league officially shut down in 1986 litigation proved successful in eventually guaranteeing that Young be paid the annuity value he was promised.

Steve Young would go on to sign with an abysmal Tampa Bay Buccaneers team in the NFL and suffer a 3-16 record as a starter over two seasons before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers were he was mentored by the great Joe Montana while serving as his backup. Young went on to have a prolific NFL career despite wasted time in the USFL and with the Buccaneers. Looking back on the NFL success of Steve Young the two-time MVP who has the record for highest passing rating to go along with a Super Bowl ring is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the history of the game. In 2005 Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

AN UNOFFICIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF AN AMERICAN ECONOMY

First of all I am not a psychologist but humor me and keep on reading. As I watched our economic demise unfold before my eyes, I got to thinking: Is there an unspoken pyschological aspect to this debt problem? And does anybody see it besides me?

Our country is in trillions of dollars in debt and I have yet to hear anybody address the deeper issue of this countries obsession with the all American pass time:purchasing. The underlining emotion cushioning the debt that we as a country has accumulated is the oldest emotion ever to rival jealousy:that feeling is insecurity.

Our society has been a leader in the evolvement of this emotion ever since psychologists have accused us of abusing it, and may I say with pity in their eyes. Keeping up with the Jones’ is a saying that was invented in the heart of America. When anyone mentions the Joneses, we don’t say; “Who are the Joneses?” We all know exactly who you’re talking about.

Who are these people really? Are they a concept or a reality? Are they really doing as well as we think?

Maybe in reality they are this sinister, evil reflection of our culture. Instead of looking up to them maybe we should be looking inward.

Let us take a closer look at who this family really is. Let’s call Mr. Jones, the cult, urban legend, upper middle class, version of Satan. Let’s look at Mrs. Jones as that consummate high school cheerleader who grew up in middle America and married her high school sweetheart, who just happened to be the class president, Football star, and the leader of an unofficial evil society. Little Brady and Little Missy are the off spring of these concepts we have created , who walk around school campus’ with the newest , most expensive cell phones (with unlimited minutes of course), the cutest car and a covenant of followers who chant the newest lingo like ” Phat”, “Whatever!” “Omg!” and “For Real?”

It’s possible that they chastise your kids in school daily, stressing how much your kids aren’t as good as they are. Maybe over the dinner table the Jones’ gossip about how your kids’ shoes didn’t cost as much as their kids’ shoes or how your kid’s laptop only cost a measly $600.00. They give your kids night mares that embrace the ideas of humiliation and exile. They are the ones that make your kids feel like lepers in the midst of puberty. They are the ones that have told your children that tantrums are the new passages of teen life. They are the ones who have told your daughter that if she slams doors, pouts and screams loud enough and long enough, you’ll give in. They tell her to hang in there, you’ll come around. Their motto: don’t give up until your parents give in. (The Jones kids are truly diabolical).

They’ve told your son to collect as many girlfriends as humanly possible because it will make him cool. They’ve told him long greasy hair is actually attractive and tattoo’s are the greatest form of self expression. They have told your kids that you are blind, deaf and dumb to all of their antics and that you will never “get” them. Communication is fruitless because you are, of course, clueless. They’ve also told your kids that you didn’t exist until your kids were completely aware of you. Around the ages of 7 or 8.

Mrs. Jones shops at the finest department stores with valet. She is embraced by a group of pleasers with glasses of champagne and bottled water. Mrs. Jones knows that she is perfect, in every way. She has never had her girlfriends hold her hair out of her face as she hugs a toilet from a long girls night out. She’s never tasted red meat . Her nails are perfect, her hair is perfect, and her body is perfect. She feels that cellulite is a curse that is brought upon you for all the dinners you’ve burned and for all the times you forgot to take the clothes out of the dryer and fold them before they wrinkled. Although she’s never cooked or washed clothes a day in her life. And yes, although she can afford to place her kids in private schools, she has purposely placed her children in public schools just to show you that your children aren’t as good as hers. Mrs. Jones has never had mood swings, never had an eating disorder, and she certainly has never had bouts of depression or unmanicured toe nails. Oh yeah, she runs five miles every morning and drinks a gallon of water. Everyday.

Mr. Jones has never had love handles, a mid life crisis, hemorrhoids or even an in grown hair. He’s never even changed a tire. He doesn’t know how to cut wood and has never had back hair. He’s perfect. He’s got the best golf score in the city and has never held a golf club in his long life. He doesn’t have to. He is your competition even when he’s not on the green. Oh and he’s never had a butt pimple. Ever.

Mrs. Jones dresses little Missy in enough name brand clothes expensive enough to pay your mortgage at any given month. Little Missy goes to tanning salons every other day and will never get skin cancer. Bikini lines are forbidden. Little Missy has never had a bad hair day, a zit or her monthly visitor Flo. She’s never gotten anything less than an A although she does not know how to read. She only wears the most expensive make up and the most expensive shoes. She’s thin, smart and beautiful. Her motto is “looks aren’t everything, unless someone is watching.”

Little Brady has the prettiest girlfriend in school and never worries about acne, sweating or embarrassing muscle reactions. He’s perfect. He drives the coolest car. He’s known for being the best athlete in school but has never played a game. He’s never had athlete’s foot and he’s never scratched himself in public. He’s perfect.

Mr. and Mrs. Jones have never taught their kids the value of a dollar so little Missy and Brady have lived with their parents for over hundreds of years. They can’t survive on their own. They don’t know how.

They have endless amounts of money and fake smiles. They drive around in cars that cost more than our houses. This family has bounced from neighborhood to neighborhood over hundreds of years, causing havoc and envy to all that lay eyes on them. They never age, they never change.

They chuckle in private at how easy it is to influence an insecure society who watches every move they make. They smile with their overly whitened teeth that blind oncoming traffic as they turn into the nearest Starbucks to give themselves the caffeine high they need to continue their endless rule of the world.

When you pull up next to them on the street, they give you that “ahhh, you poor soul” look. They eye your clothes with a sad expression of pity . They give you that smile that has you questioning , are they laughing with you or at you? At the cocktail parties you both attend, they look you up and down and the first thing that comes to their mind is, are you the help or an invited guest? They look a bit confused then snap out of it and flash you a beautiful bright smile and welcome you into their circle. On the pretense of course, that by the end of the night you will be converted. They boldly let you know with a confident grin that you will never be a Jones. Although they do manage to convince you that you could come close, with a coy wink, thumbs up and a little bit of their direction.

They invite you to their five bedroom house with the white picket fence, a cute miniature dog that costs thousands and their flat screen televisions. All seven of them. They show you their pool tables, imported furniture, wine cellars and elaborate wet bars. They have two hundred bottles of alcohol from all over the world. They drink and drink all night but never get drunk. You on the other hand have to limit your usual binge drinking habit of downing six or seven glasses of rum and coke so you don’t let them see the real you. The drunk you and the honest you. The not so rich you and most visibly, the insecure you.

Because they are perfect, they have never had to talk to their children about the hazards of life. They have never struggled and learned survival skills. They will never feel pain, happiness, or enlightenment. They will never cry at a heartwarming scene in a movie. They have never laughed so hard that they’ve peed a little in their pants. They have never grasped the concept of hard work, had a callus, or tension headache. They have never felt the empathy or worth of another person because they have no feelings other than the undying need to make you feel less than who you are. That is their goal. They are perfect and you are not and they have not changed for years. Our society has created this family to torment the average person. We’ve made them bigger and stronger every year. We have manifested this family throughout history and we look up to them.

Delusion and self envy is their drug of choice. They are never hungry. Their diet consists of our self loathing, envy and dubiousness. That is how they have survived for so long. They are gorged and quite content. What does that say about us? Just a little something to think about.

So the next time you see the Jones’ in your neighborhood don’t be shy. Flash them that pretty yellow stained smile while in your crappy little car. You know the one with the horrible politically correct bumper stickers and rides on a bald spare tire? ( You know the one I’m talking about.The one that’s paid off.) Then you have to wave at them with unmanicured fingernails that are stained with the guacamole you had with your tacos for lunch and then thank God that you don’t have hundreds or thousands of dollars of credit card debt. That although you are living pay check to pay check, you feel good about yourself and only spend what you can afford. If you can’t afford it, save up. Credit has become a bad word in your world. Let them know that you are just fine with yourself and that you will survive. Butt pimples and all.

I Don’t Do Sports, but I Wear Sneakers

How many people among those who wear their favorite Nike sneakers, or Puma sneakers, are actually sports people? Probably, less then half of those who wear sports shoes are into sports. The thing is that this type of footwear is very comfortable to wear.

First athletic shoes were invented in 1907, though some believe that the first basketball shoe was made in 1917th by Converse All Stars. The first basketball shoes were made by Spalding, specifically for basketball. Anyway, the first companies that decided to produce sneakers were small companies that were producing bicycle tires.

Throughout the time, this small business has evolved into a great industry, which not only involves athletic shoes, or sneakers, but it also involves nearly all of the sports wear, including jackets, pants, sweatshirts, jerseys, socks, etc. There’s a great range of sports companies that specialize on sports clothes and sports footwear, either for professional sportsmen, or average customers. Winter is Just Around the Corner… Don’t Let it Slow you Down!

You’ve worked your ass off all summer long. Over the past 3 months you’ve added a good amount of muscle , your strength is through the roof, and you’ve got a good solid tan going. But most of all, you’ve been something you haven’t been since your high school days… consistent! You’ve only missed one morning that you were supposed to be in the gym, and you felt terrible about that, even though you had a good excuse.

But now the summer is over, days are seemingly getting shorter and you’re starting to feel the weight of the load you’ve been holding up all summer… fatigue is setting in… maybe it’s time for a break…

In the summer, you might even throw in an extra 30-minute workout before you go out with your friends so your arms are pumped up in your tight short sleeve T. In the winter it’s just not that way. The fact that you have to dress heavier might even stop you from going out completely. Why go out of your way to build a great physique just so you can throw on a bulky sweater and long pants everyday?

Winter can be a hinderance on your workout life too! To me, there’s nothing like stepping out of the gym into the subtle breeze of a warm summer night after throwing down a gut-busting workout. In the winter, you hate that you have to get all dressed again, throw your coat on, complete with hat, gloves and boots. Then you step out into that bitter cold air as it hits every bead of sweat on your face, biting and stinging, and causing your whole body to tense all up as you climb into your stiff, frigid car. But winter isn’t just about cold weather. Even if you live in a “warm weather” state, you are probably affected by the gloom of winter – and you might not even know it. The shorter daylight time alone can throw your mental presence of time into a complete tailspin leaving you “groggy” no matter what time you workout.

Well, there are a number of things we can do, depending on the severity of the circumstances. The truth is, we all suffer from it to some degree! Like I said already, even in the warm weather states, you can be affected by winter. Actually, winter depression isn’t much different than any other form of depression as far as symptoms are concerned. They just come about during the fall and winter months and then subside during the spring and summer. Which makes a lot of since with the way most people (myself included) are more motivated in the summer than in the winter. If you look at the general symptoms of depression you will see how bad this could mess you up. Lack of energy, increased need for sleep, and a craving for sweets and excess food resulting in unwanted fat… winter is a bitch!

Anyway, back to the issue here. Summer has come to an end and winter is slowly taking over – forcing your mind and body into “hibernation”. But how do you keep from letting winter depression set in? How do you avoid getting that “winter coat”? How do you survive the storm?

Here are a few points that may help you see your way through the winter without falling off the wagon altogether.

Get more sunlight! Sunlight may or may not be an issue for you, but the truth is, winter comes with shorter days and longer nights. So if you have an office job without a window or you work nights – you might not see daylight for days at a time! “Light therapy” has been shown to help to improve some peoples’ mental well-being during times when they have less exposure to sunlight. Basically, you sit in front of a box that has some special super bright light lamps for up to 2 hours per day while you are reading or watching TV or whatever. Sounds hokey? Yeah… I agree. But the scientific facts are there to prove it!

Change it up! Remember the time – back in the day – when you were excited to get to the gym? Back when you felt like you were making progress every time you stepped foot in the weight room. Well, you can get there again by doing one simple thing…. Change it up! I like to look at wintertime as a reason to change it up in the gym. I say, treat it the same way you would treat any other plateau. A change in routine can stimulate you physically and mentally! And can help you stay motivated to go to the gym and hit it hard every day.

A modification in your routine can be subtle or dramatic; it’s up to you. You could change to a completely different routine if you must, but even something simple, like using dumbbells instead of a barbell on the bench press, can stimulate substantial growth if you haven’t changed things for a while.

Also, you might be happy with your progress so far and feel like your hard work is finally paying off. But don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can start to slack off and just start maintaining what you have. Even though you might be able to, you’re probably going to find yourself spending more time making excuses than in the weight room. Whatever you do, don’t quit! If you think you’re happy now, imagine how you will feel 3 months from now! Trust me, especially during the first 12 months of training, progress in the weight room builds upon itself exponentially! The more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn and the faster results will come.

Audit your diet! Not only do winter months bring about cold, gloomy, sunless days, they bring about family gatherings and dreadfully tempting food packed holidays. This time of year you need to be even more conscious than normal because the temptations don’t stop; at least not until January comes back around and everyone wants to get in shape again! We all need to audit our diets during the holidays and make sure that we aren’t setting ourselves up for the same ol’ New Years Resolution. The best way to avoid failure in any situation is to set achievable goals and devise a plan to hit them.

Some Diet Hints:

-Avoid ‘dangerous’ highly tempting foods altogether. Don’t trust yourself at all! Don’t even put yourself in that situation! If there is a situation you can’t avoid, make sure that when you get there, you have already eaten so that you don’t overdo it with bad food.

-Keep your hunger level down so you don’t get in that “I need food and I don’t care what it is!” mode. If you find yourself pulling into a Taco Bell because you are desperate for food, you aren’t eating often enough to keep your hunger level down. You can always keep a protein bar, some fruit, or even an MRP on you at all times for situations like these.

-Conjure up some support by getting your significant other or another family member on board with your diet plan. It is a lot easier to “say no” when you have a person there to support your decision. Also, you can help hold each other accountable.

-Don’t give up! Nobody’s perfect and you will probably catch yourself digging into a seriously fattening ¾ pound cheeseburger that (at the moment) tastes like heaven! But don’t get down on yourself too much and don’t give up.

Know your enemy! During the season, a professional football player might look at over 40 hours of film covering his direct competition every week. If he’s good, he will know his opponent inside and out. He knows exactly how he will react in every possible situation! This gives him the upper hand he needs to take advantage of his opponent’s weakness. Of course, in football, it still always comes down to execution, but knowing your counterpart’s weakness is a huge part of the game plan.

And the same goes for overcoming your own personal weaknesses. Take a few minutes to sit down and really evaluate your situation. Just realizing what is going on inside you to cause your “issues” is probably the biggest step in dealing with them. If you realize that you are tired in the morning because the sun isn’t up yet, it will make it a lot easier to deal with it. “…and knowing is half of the battle!” Right? Remember those little lessons at the end of every GI Joe cartoon? I guess TV isn’t all bad!

Take the “Nike Mentality”… Just do it! This is the time of year when they separate the men from the boys! It’s time to hunker down and see what you are really made of! When most people start to crack and excuses start popping up – keeping them out of the gym for days at a time – you need to step it up. You need to continue to get up early every day to do your cardio and still hit it hard when you jet to the gym after work. I was talking to a friend of mine who owns a gym in southern Colorado and he told me that in the wintertime, the attendance level in his gym goes down over 60%! Don’t be one of those guys that searches for excuses to NOT GO to the gym. Be the person that finds reasons TO GO!

Hopefully these tips help you successfully find your way through the dead of winter! If they do, you just might have a 6-month head start on the other 60% when they come back to the gym next summer. For me, I take the last approach with winter. I look at winter as a challenge that needs to be overcome. I think of it as the 4th quarter and I’m not going to be the guy that loses in the 4th quarter because he is tired and out of shape.

I belong to a social club of sorts, a group of gentlemen who gather on Thursday evenings to indulge in a few of the finer drafts offered by our local craft brewers. Back in college you might have referred to our get togethers as a frat or something equally tawdry. However, I can assure you that our club is nothing of the sort, although it is a club, make no mistake. One can’t just stagger in off the street and buy us a round to get invited (although you’re welcome to try). We pay membership dues and we support a number of local charities, including the Food Bank and a Children’s Literacy Program. We also lend our collective corporate expertise out to small businesses on occasion.

We were sitting around the table last Thursday night enjoying a new organically brewed pilsner when a few of the guys started throwing around ideas about another area we could focus our considerable marketing skills on. At this point I should mention that fully half of our membership have either a Marketing degree or an MBA or both, so that’s why these sort of things keep coming up instead of more typical drinking topics like football, golf, hockey or beach volleyball. The couple who own the organic brewery happened to pop by that night and a few of us approached them with our ideas for expanding their business. Key to this effort was the idea of having high quality, embroidered tee shirts and hoodies made up. We’ve had shirts printed before to promote some of our club causes and events and I firmly believe that a small business like a craft brewery is going to get a lot more bang for its buck by giving away tee shirts to customers than it would ever see through radio or print advertising. Not only that, but the campaign keeps going for as long as people keep the shirts.  It’s brilliant.

The brewery owners took a little convincing, but when we sat down and explained the costs associated with a mid-market radio campaign compared to the cost of having a few hundred tee shirts printed up and distributed, they were impressed. I pulled out my iPhone and showed them a site where they could order shirts made from certified organic cotton -something they could use as part of the promotion to tie into their organic beer. That sealed the deal.

The boys and I come pretty cheap as far as marketing expertise is considered, so long as you catch us on a Thursday night. It only cost the organic brewery folks a few cases of their product and a dozen tee shirts.

NFL Fan Gear For Women

If you go to a Nfl Football game at any stadium you will see many things. You’ll see men in football jerseys, men in football hats, lines a mile long at the food and drink stands, children enjoying their very first live football game, and a sea of PINK ! Pink ? Really ? Absolutely, with most of the guys in jerseys and with many of the kids you’ll see moms, friends, wives, girlfriends, and even a few grandmas. More and more female football fans are gravitating to the pastels and pink football fan gear made especially for women. No more wearing those oversized, bulky jerseys and shirts that were meant for a man.

The NFL has made great strides in the last few years in marketing to their female fans. Women want a shirt, a jersey, a hat that was made for them. Women can choose from an abundance of fan gear created just for them. Jerseys in all sorts of pastel colors, figure flattering team shirts, and feminine looking hats, sweats, backpacks, pocketbooks and more.

I am a woman who thoroughly enjoys the game of football, in fact you could say I’m pretty much borderline “crazed fan”. Not long ago I went shopping again, passed by a sporting goods store and wandered in. I was shocked and delighted by what I found. The store was chock full of fan gear for women ! The selection of jerseys, shirts, pants, and other items all meant for women was wonderful. Pastel pink, green, blue, and purple colors abounded. These items are not only colored more for a woman’s taste but they’re cut to fit our figures. What a gold mine I had found and won’t I look fantastic when football season rolls around this fall !

If you’re a woman who’s tired of wearing borrowed shirts and jerseys from your husband or boyfriend, take heart. There is an abundance of NFL fan gear for women out there, all you have to worry about now is what color you’ll look best in when selecting your new NFL jersey !

I think the Soffe one looks better and isn’t as long as the aerie one. And besides, the aerie one has stuff written on it.
I don’t think both of those are suitable for running. They’re exercise pants, but if you’re planning to use it for your uniform or something, i think you should get running shorts.
